PhotoSweeper will be your go-to app if you take a series of shots of the same scene, allowing you to pick the best one, you edit photos with software like Photoshop, Pixelmator, etc., and make backups, or you have photos scattered on external hard drives and local disks, in Apple Photos, Lightroom Classic or Capture One libraries. PhotoSweeper works with Photos, iPhoto, Aperture, Capture One, and Lightroom Classic media libraries, as well as photos from your hard drives and external storage. I've only scratched the surface of what all PhotoSweeper can do, but can already testify that it works great and handled over 100,000 files with ease.PhotoSweeper is a precise and super-efficient tool that eliminates similar or duplicate photos. I can't imagine how long this would have taken me to clean up without PhotoSweeper! There were some images that had four duplicate copies. This alone resulted in a 58% reduction in the number of images I have. You read that correctly, in less than 20 minutes, I downloaded, installed, and scanned my SSD for EXACT duplicates. Within minutes, PhotoSweeper informed me that I had 122,226 images, and 70,955 of those were exact duplicates. I'd duplicate the stars to 10 or 20 if I could. PhotoSweeper was rated very high, AND IT DESERVES THOSE RANKINGS. I finally bit the bullet, consolidated everything into one hard drive (internal SSD), and searched the app store. The fact I had tens of thousands of images to go through, on multiple hard drives, knowing many were duplicates, only made the procrastination easier. After a hard drive failure, and flat out procrastination for years, I decided it's time to clean up the mess. I've taken thousands of digital photos over the years, and have made extra/backup copies just in case. I would duplicate the stars on PhotoSweeper The coder of this program should receive a nobel prize (maybe the noble prize too)! On my 2017 iMac with 64gb ram the first run took nearly 10 hours running in the background, but I was able to continue WFH while it did its thing.

I checked 100 of the duplicates at random and only found 1 photo where I would have kept a different image. The program nearly always defaulted to the best shot (highest megapixels, and some other AI algorithms). Then using the advanced features that search for identical color balance in the photo.

Crisis! First run with PhotoSweeper on basic settings eliminated 40,000 exact duplicates. Now I was at 144,000 photos with up to 4 copies each with unique metadata. Then in 2017 I did it again (dont ask why). After scanning each duplicate has its own metadata and slightly different digital characteristics. Problem #1: some packs had been ordered with duplicate copies from CVS. I had added most of my paper photos to my library by scanning using an HP feeder scanner for standard size photos. I had a specific problem that I needed solved: Identical duplicates with unique metadata that completely fools any less sophisticated programs.
